【词汇精讲】absorb是及物动词,意为“吸收”。

Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air and moisture from the soil.

【词汇精讲】aim作名词,意为“目的,目标”;作动词,意为“力求达到,力争做到,瞄准”。

Living without an aim is like sailing without a compass.

生活中没有目标就如同航海时没有指南针。

【句式剖析】本句中when引导的是时间状语从句,he felt...是主句,as if...引导的是表语从句。as if 是连词词组,相当于as though,意为“好像,好似”,通常跟在look,seem等系动词后面引导表语从句。

He quickly ran home,looking as if there was something wrong with him.

他快步跑回家,看上去好像有什么事不对劲。

It looks as if it is going to rain.

看上去要下雨了。

【句式拓展】(1)如果所引导的从句表示的是真实的或极有可能发生的情况时,句子要用陈述语气。

It sounds as if he has already known my secret.

听起来他好像已经知道我的秘密了。

(2)如果所引导的从句只是表示一种假设的情况,从句的谓语动词要用虚拟语气,其形式如下:

She treated her adopted son as if he were her own child.

她对待养子好像他是自己的孩子一样。

The girl listened as if she had been turned into a stone.

那女孩倾听着,像已经变成了石头似的。

过去分词作表语和状语

一、过去分词作表语

过去分词作表语表示主语所处状态或主观心理感受,相当于形容词的作用。

They all felt challenged.他们都感觉受到了挑战。

Mr Brown and Mary are married.布朗先生和玛丽结婚了。

Tom was disappointed to hear his friend was unable to come.

汤姆听到他的朋友不能来很失望。

The window of my room is broken.

我房间的窗户是坏的。

注意: 表示感觉的一些过去分词 (surprised,disappointed,excited,pleased 等 ) 及其他一些过去分词(dressed,drunk,devoted,lost,known,married,bent,recovered,separated 等)常可用作表语,表示状态。其中有些只表状态,毫无被动意义。

2.过去分词作表语与被动语态的区别

(1)被动语态强调动作,主语是动作承受者;过去分词作表语说明主语的状态或特征。

The novel was written about ten years ago.

这本小说是大约10年前写的。

The novel is well written.

这本小说写得很好。

(2)被动语态后常接by短语,表示动作的执行者;而过去分词作表语后不接by短语,但可以接其他的介词,表示特征。

The small town is surrounded with hills on three sides.

那个小城镇三面环山。

He was frightened because he was surrounded by a lot of dogs.

他很害怕,因为他被一群狗围着。

二、过去分词作状语

1.过去分词作状语时的意义

过去分词(短语)作状语,说明谓语动词的动作和状态,其逻辑宾语是句子的主语,也就是说过去分词与句子的主语之间是被动关系。

Seen from the building,the garden looks beautiful.(see的逻辑宾语是garden)

从楼上看,这个花园很美丽。

2.过去分词作状语时的作用

由于过去分词(短语)具有副词的某些特征,因此在句中可以作时间、条件、原因、让步、伴随或结果等状语。

(1)时间状语

Asked why he was absent from class,the little boy lied that he was ill.

当被问到他为什么没有上课时,那个小男孩撒谎说他病了。

Questioned by the police,Mr Brown was at a loss what to do.

警察询问布朗先生时,他不知所措。

(2)条件状语

Given enough water,the newly-planted trees wouldn’t have died.

浇足水,这些新栽的树就不会死了。

Compared with his brother,Tom seems more diligent.

与他弟弟相比,汤姆好像更勤奋。

(3)原因状语

Frightened by the terrible noise,Mary didn’t dare to go out alone at night.

受到可怕声音的惊吓,玛丽晚上不敢独自外出。

Encouraged by the progress he has made,he works harder.

受到所取得成绩的鼓舞,他工作更努力了。
